Shape and background first
Federal designation R10-6a in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Placed beside a painted stop bar set back from the corner, commonly where a wide crosswalk, a rail crossing, or a signal detector needs the clearance.

What the test wants you to know
The mistake people make
It marks the actual stop point, which is often set back from the crosswalk to protect a sensor loop, a crosswalk, or a sightline for cross traffic. Stopping past this sign while the light is red is treated the same as running the stop point at the intersection itself.
