Your missed questions
Every question you get wrong anywhere on this site saves to a review deck on your own device. What the process looks like
- An instruction permit is available at age 14 and stays valid for two years.
- While learning, the permit holder must have a licensed driver aged at least 21 with at least one year of driving experience in the vehicle.
- Drivers who get their permit at 16 or 17 must hold it at least six months before the DMV will issue a provisional license.
- Moving up to a provisional license also needs a parent, guardian, or employer to certify 40 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them in harder conditions such as darkness or bad weather.
- The at-home knowledge test is open to Alaska residents from age 16 for the Class D test, 18 for the motorcycle test, and 20 for the alcohol awareness test.
Sitting the knowledge test at a DMV office carries no separate test charge; the instruction permit itself costs $15. Taking it at home through KnowTo Drive Online costs $11.50 per attempt.
The DMV driver manual says a failed written test can be retaken the following day. Online, you can retry the same day up to four more times, and a fifth failure or disqualification shuts you out of online testing for a year, leaving the office as your only route.

What score do you need to pass the Alaska permit test?
16 of the 20 questions, which is 80%. Four wrong answers is the most you can afford.
How long do you get to finish the Alaska permit test?
25 minutes, which works out to about 75 seconds a question. That is comfortable if you have studied and tight if you are reasoning each one out from scratch.
What happens if you fail the Alaska knowledge test?
At a DMV office you can come back the next day. Online you can retry the same day, up to four more attempts, but failing or being disqualified five times blocks online testing for a year and sends you to an office.
How much does the Alaska knowledge test cost?
