The Motor Vehicle Commission's exam is 50 scored multiple choice questions with 40 correct to pass, which is 80 percent and 10 misses, and the driver manual notes that a survey question about organ donation is attached on top of those 50. Language coverage is unusually wide: the MVC offers the test in English, American Sign Language and twelve other languages, and supplies headphones so it can be given orally to anyone who cannot read in any of them. The rule New Jersey is best known for sits outside the exam room. Anyone under 21 holding a special learner's permit, an examination permit or a probationary license must display two red reflective MVC decals, one on each plate, at a cost of 4 dollars, and driving without them is a graduated licensing violation carrying a fine of 100 dollars. Permit holders 21 and over are exempt from the decals, the curfew and the passenger rules alike.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the New Jersey Rules of the Road, Title 39 of the New Jersey Statutes. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
New Jersey's graduated path starts at 16 with a special learner's permit, which requires an adult with a valid New Jersey license and at least three years of driving experience to sit in the front seat.
An examination permit becomes available at 17, and both permit types are valid for two years. Before a probationary license, a teen must practice supervised for at least six months and log a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours after dark.
Anyone under 21 holding a special learner's permit, examination permit or probationary license must display two red reflective MVC decals, one on the top left corner of the front plate and one on the top left corner of the rear plate. The pair costs 4 dollars and comes with the permit.
Breaking a graduated licensing restriction, decals included, can bring a 100 dollar fine or a suspension of driving privileges. Permit and probationary holders who are 21 or older are exempt from the decal, curfew and passenger rules.
