Know the format before you book.
Utah runs two versions of the same exam and decides which one you get by where you were last licensed. A first time applicant takes a closed book test of 50 questions and needs 40 right. Anyone who already held a license in another state or country takes a 25 question version and needs 20, and that one is open book. Both are graded against the single standard the Utah Driver Handbook sets, 80 percent or better, so the shorter paper is not the softer one: it allows five misses against the long test's ten. The Driver License Division also lets you sit two written knowledge tests in a single day, and your test fee covers up to three attempts inside 12 months before another fee buys three more. Utah publishes a 30 question sample test on the DLD website so you can see the format before booking. The entry level learner permit is available from 15, with 40 hours of certified practice including 10 after sunset.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Utah Code. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
Utah issues an entry level learner permit from age 15, and the holding period before a first driver license depends on age: 6 months at 16 or 17, no holding period at 18 provided an approved driver education course is finished, and 90 days at 19 and older unless that course is completed.
Applicants aged 15 to 18 must complete 40 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours after sunset, certified by a parent or legal guardian. Applicants 19 and older who skip driver education must complete the same 40 hours.
The person in the front passenger seat must be a licensed parent, legal guardian, approved driving instructor, or a licensed adult 21 or older carrying evidence of authorization from the parent or legal guardian.
An approved driver education course is required before licensing for applicants aged 15 to 18. At 19 and older it becomes optional, and completing it waives the 90 day permit holding period.

How many questions are on the Utah driver's license knowledge test?

What score do you need to pass the Utah knowledge test?
