How long does a learner permit last?
Long enough that most learners stop thinking about it, which is exactly why people turn up for a road test holding a permit that lapsed a fortnight ago. The period is set state by state, and in several places it is not a period at all but a birthday.
19 of 51 jurisdictions confirmed. This is the thinnest of our national tables, and we would rather show you that than hide it. A confirmed row means the validity period was read on the agency, its manual or the statute that sets it, on the date shown. The remaining 32 rows say Not confirmed and link to a note naming the state and the agency, because a permit expiry taken from a third party site is precisely the kind of figure that goes stale without anyone noticing. Nothing on this page is inferred from another state.

The second column is what the agency itself says happens next, quoted from the same page as the period. Where an agency publishes the length but says nothing about renewal or a retest, that column says so rather than assuming the friendlier answer.

A permit does not always expire on a schedule
Reading the 19 confirmed rows together, the deadlines fall into shapes rather than into a range of numbers. The grouping below is ours. The wording inside it is the agency's, and each state links to the source in the table.
A fixed term from the day it is issued
The common case. The permit runs one, two, three or four years from issue and the clock is the same for everyone. It is the easiest kind to plan around and the easiest to forget, because nothing about your birthday reminds you.

A term that runs to an age instead
In 4 of the confirmed jurisdictions the permit is pinned to a birthday rather than to a duration. That has a consequence people rarely think through: the younger you are when you get the permit, the longer you hold it, and the older you are the shorter it is. A learner who applies late can end up with months where the state intended years.
- Colorado: 3 years or until the 21st birthday, whichever comes first.
- Michigan: Runs until the teen turns 18.
- North Carolina: Until the permit holder's 18th birthday.
- Rhode Island: 1 year, or until the holder turns 18, whichever is later.
The ones that cannot be renewed
This is the expensive group. Arkansas and District of Columbia state plainly that the permit cannot be renewed, which means an expiry is not an inconvenience: the applicant goes back to the knowledge test and starts the process again. At the other end, 7 agencies publish a renewal path, though several allow it only once.

The permit that lasts until you are licensed
This is the shape people ask about most and the one we cannot show you. Among the confirmed rows there is no jurisdiction that issues a learner permit running open ended until a licence is issued. Every confirmed permit expires on a date. If an agency publishes an open ended permit, we have not read the page that says so, and this page will not claim it until we have.
The nearest thing to it is the birthday group above, where a fourteen year old in a state that ends the permit at eighteen holds it for four years, which is longer than most fixed terms in this table. That is not the same as open ended, and the difference matters on the day it lapses.
What to actually do about it
Put the expiry date in a calendar the day the permit is issued, with a reminder two months out rather than two weeks. Two months is roughly the gap between deciding you are ready for a road test and getting an appointment in most places, so it is the point at which an expiring permit is still fixable.
The second thing worth checking is whether your state ties anything else to the same document. Several attach the supervised practice log and the holding period to the permit rather than to the applicant, so letting it lapse can reset more than the piece of plastic. Common questions about permit expiry
How long is a learner permit valid?
It depends on the state. Confirmed periods run from one year to four years, and several states do not set a period at all. Instead the permit runs to a fixed birthday, most often the holder's eighteenth, so two learners in the same state can hold the same permit for very different lengths of time.
What happens if my learner permit expires before I take the road test?
There is no single answer. Some states let the permit be renewed, once or repeatedly. Some make it non-renewable, so an expired permit means sitting the knowledge test again from the start. A few attach a waiting period to a late renewal. The consequence is set by the state, not by a national rule, so check the row for yours.
Can a learner permit be renewed?
In several states yes, and in a few explicitly no. Where an agency publishes the answer it appears in the table. Where it does not, the cell says so rather than guessing, because renewing on an assumption and finding out at the counter is an expensive mistake.
Is there a state where the permit lasts until you get your licence?
Not among the states whose validity period we have been able to confirm. Every confirmed permit expires on a date, either a fixed term from issue or a birthday.
