Free Rhode Island permit practice tests

Rhode Island is one of the very few states where a public college does the testing: CCRI runs the mandatory 33 hour classroom course and its final exam counts as the RI DMV Knowledge Test, while every adult applicant instead books a reservation only slot at DMV headquarters in Cranston, where the computerized exam is offered in Portuguese as well as English and Spanish.

Honest note: RI DMV does not publish the exam format in a place we could confirm, so the 40 question count and the pass mark of 28 shown here are our best information rather than a verified fact. The practice questions themselves teach Rhode Island law either way. Confirm the format with Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles before your appointment.

Every Rhode Island test

Work through them in order.

The essentials

Start here. Five distinct sets drawn from across the whole bank, plus a marathon that keeps going until you have seen everything.

Signs, signals and right of way

The two areas that fail the most people. Work through the sign tests until every shape and color is automatic, then handle the intersection scenarios.

The rules that get you fined

Speed, alcohol, phones, seat belts and the state specific limits that carry real penalties. These questions cite the statute so you learn the rule, not just the answer.

The exam simulator

The real thing: your state's exact question count and pass mark, scored the way the licensing agency scores it.

Your missed questions

Every question you get wrong anywhere on this site saves to a review deck on your own device. It comes back after a day, then three days, then a week, and retires once you have answered it correctly three times running. Open any test above and the review button appears as soon as the deck has something in it.

Getting licensed in Rhode Island

What the process looks like

  • Rhode Island's Limited Learner Permit is available at 16, and applicants under 18 must first pass an accredited 33 hour classroom driver education course.
  • The Limited Learner Permit is valid until the holder turns 18 and can be renewed a maximum of two times. If you turn 18 before holding it for a year, you can apply for a full learner's permit instead.
  • You must hold the permit for at least six months before you can take the RI DMV driving skills test, and your supervising driver must be at least 21 and licensed for at least five years.
  • Moving up to the provisional license requires passing the skills test, six months free of moving violations, and a parent signed statement covering at least 50 hours of driving practice with 10 of those hours at night.
  • Applicants 18 or older can skip the classroom driver education course entirely and go straight to the computerized knowledge exam.

The RI DMV makes you wait at least 8 days before sitting the knowledge exam again.

The knowledge test is written from the Rhode Island General Laws, Title 31 (Motor and Other Vehicles), Chapter 10 (Operators' and Chauffeurs' Licenses). Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.

Frequently asked

Rhode Island permit test questions, answered

How many questions are on the Rhode Island permit test?

Forty. The RI DMV puts the number in its own driver's manual, which sets the computerized knowledge exam at 40 multiple choice questions and allows up to 90 minutes to finish. The questions are drawn from Rhode Island motor vehicle law and the rules of the road. Checked against the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles on 27 August 2026.

What score do I need to pass the RI knowledge test?

The DMV has never printed one. A full text search of the current driver's manual turns up no percentage and no minimum number of correct answers, and none of the DMV permit and test pages give one either. The closest official figure comes from the Community College of Rhode Island, which gives the RI DMV Knowledge Test as the final exam of the state's mandatory 33 hour course and tells students they need 70 percent. Applied to the DMV's confirmed 40 questions that is 28 correct, which is the bar this page's practice test uses. Treat it as a well grounded working figure rather than a published rule.

Where do I take the Rhode Island knowledge test?

Applicants 18 and older book a reservation at RI DMV headquarters, 600 New London Ave in Cranston. Under 18s who took driver education somewhere other than CCRI also test in Cranston and bring their course completion certificate.

Can I sit the RI knowledge exam in a language other than English?

The computerized exam runs in English, Spanish and Portuguese during normal business hours. Any other language is handled as a printed exam that has to be booked ahead through a separate request, and you must bring someone who can translate for you before and after the test, though only you are allowed in the exam room.

What happens if I fail the Rhode Island knowledge test?

You wait at least 8 days before trying again, a longer cooldown than most neighboring states impose.
