Mississippi is one of the few states where a first license involves no state road test at all. A parent, teacher or guardian affidavit covering fifty hours of witnessed driving stands in its place, and a driver education requirement only arrives on July 1, 2027. The written side is just as unusual: the pass mark of 80 percent sits in the state administrative code rather than the driver manual, the state has never published how many questions that percentage is measured against, and a passing score stays on your file for two full years.

What the process looks like
- You must be at least fifteen to apply for a Regular Learner's Permit, and you must hold it for one year before upgrading to a Regular Driver's License. Turning seventeen first cancels the one year wait.
- The Regular Learner's Permit is valid for two years and lets you drive only with a licensed driver aged twenty-one or older physically occupying the seat next to you.
- An original license needs three things: pass the Vision Exam, pass the Computerized Exam, and provide an affidavit from a parent, teacher, or guardian who has witnessed at least fifty hours of driving and attests to your proficiency.
- A passed Computerized Exam score stays valid for two years, so a permit holder who supplies the affidavit inside that window does not have to sit the exam again.
- Applicants aged fifteen to seventeen also have to produce a school attendance form no more than thirty days old, unless they are under eighteen and married, in which case a marriage license takes its place.
- Beginning July 1, 2027, applicants will also have to show documentation of a completed certified Driver's Education course. That requirement is not in force yet.

How many questions are on the Mississippi DPS knowledge test?
Mississippi does not publish a number, and that is the honest answer. The official Driver's License Manual calls it the Computerized Exam and describes it only as a multiple choice test based on the manual, weighted toward state traffic laws, safe driving rules and license requirements. The state's own administrative code sets a pass mark of 80 percent but never gives a count. Prep sites settle on 30, which is the length this practice test uses so you get a realistic sitting, but no Mississippi document backs that figure.
What score do I need to pass the Mississippi permit test?
80 percent. The Driver's License Manual is silent on this, but the Mississippi Administrative Code is not: Title 31 Part 1, Rule 2.3 requires a grade of 80 percent on any and all tests issued for a permit and adds that the questions come from the state Driver Manual. So the threshold is official, even though the state never says how many questions that 80 percent is measured against.
What happens if I take a phone into a Mississippi testing area?
You lose the test and half a year. The Driver Service Bureau's testing policy bars every electronic device from the testing area, phones, ear buds and smart watches included, and anyone caught with one or caught cheating has the exam cancelled immediately and cannot test again for six months. Appeals go in writing to the Bureau within thirty days.

Does Mississippi require a road test to get a license?
The manual lists three requirements for an original license and a road test is not one of them. In its place comes a notarized affidavit from a parent, teacher, or guardian certifying at least fifty hours of witnessed driving. Drivers moving in with a valid out-of-state license skip the Computerized Exam too and take only a vision screening, though an expired out-of-state license means sitting the exam.
How long is a Mississippi Computerized Exam pass good for?
Two years. That is unusually generous, and it matters because a fifteen year old normally has to hold the permit for a full year before the license. Supply the fifty hour affidavit inside the two year window and you never sit the exam a second time. Let it lapse and you start again from the exam.
