Connecticut puts a course in front of the exam. Since 1 January 2026, every learner's permit applicant, teen or adult, has to finish the free Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course and hand the printed completion certificate to the DMV before sitting the knowledge test at all. The test itself is 25 questions with 20 correct to pass, which is 80 percent and a margin of five wrong answers, and it is appointment only with no walk in option anywhere in the state. The $40 license exam fee covers the vision test and the knowledge test together at that appointment. Fail and Connecticut is stricter than most of its neighbors on both counts: you wait seven days and pay the $40 again to rebook, so a careless first attempt costs a week and another forty dollars rather than a next day retry. Teen applicants also need 40 hours of supervised practice and hold the permit 120 days with formal driver education, or six months with parent only training.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Connecticut General Statutes Title 14, Motor Vehicles. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
Since 1 January 2026, anyone applying for a learner's permit must finish the free Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course and hand the printed completion certificate to the DMV before sitting the knowledge test.
Teen applicants need 40 hours of supervised practice driving and must hold the learner's permit for 120 days with formal driver education or six months with parent only training.
While supervised, a teen may only be accompanied by a licensed driving instructor or an adult at least 20 years old who has held a license for at least four years.
Adult learner's permits, for applicants who skip the teen program, stay valid for two years.
The $40 license exam fee covers both the vision test and the knowledge test at your appointment.
If you fail, you must wait seven days and pay the $40 fee again to reschedule the test.
