What the process looks like
- Since 1 January 2026, anyone applying for a learner's permit must finish the free Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course and hand the printed completion certificate to the DMV before sitting the knowledge test.
- Teen applicants need 40 hours of supervised practice driving and must hold the learner's permit for 120 days with formal driver education or six months with parent only training.
- While supervised, a teen may only be accompanied by a licensed driving instructor or an adult at least 20 years old who has held a license for at least four years.
- Adult learner's permits, for applicants who skip the teen program, stay valid for two years.
The $40 license exam fee covers both the vision test and the knowledge test at your appointment.
If you fail, you must wait seven days and pay the $40 fee again to reschedule the test.
