Idaho sets the tightest knowledge test bar in this part of the country. The Class D exam is 40 questions and the pass mark is 34, which is 85 percent and allows only six wrong answers, against the 80 percent most states use. That extra five points is not a rounding difference: on a 40 question paper it removes two answers of slack. The exam carries its own $5 fee, separate from the instruction permit charge and from the skills test charges, and every fee in the Idaho path is non refundable. Fail and the Idaho Transportation Department DMV imposes a three day wait before a retest, with the $5 payable again. Idaho then reverses the strictness on the road: the skills test allows up to twelve driving errors and still counts as a pass, per the handbook's own scoring note, and its cost is split between $6.50 to the county DMV and up to $28.50 paid directly to the examiner.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Idaho Code. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
Anyone under 17 who has never held an Idaho license must complete an approved driver training course and the state's Graduated Driver's License program before testing for a full Class D license.
The GDL supervised period runs a minimum of six violation-free months and requires at least 50 hours of practice driving, ten of them after dark, with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front seat.
Any traffic conviction during the supervised period cancels the permit outright, and the six-month clock restarts from zero on a newly issued one.
Drivers under 17 face escalating GDL penalties for repeat moving violations: a warning letter on the first conviction, a 30-day suspension on the second, and 60 days on the third.
The Class D knowledge test carries its own $5 fee, separate from the instruction permit and skills test charges, and all fees are non-refundable.
A failed knowledge test means a mandatory three-day wait before retesting, and the $5 test fee has to be paid again.
