Wisconsin makes you pass two written papers, not one. Alongside the 50 question knowledge test that needs 40 correct, the Wisconsin DMV runs a separate highway signs test of 15 questions needing 12, both graded at 80 percent, and neither one requires an appointment. Both are free at a DMV customer service center, which is the cheaper route by a wide margin, because the alternative is KnowTo Drive at 10 dollars per test charged whether you pass or fail, and only applicants aged 17 and under may use it. Adults in Wisconsin have no at home option at all. Allow about 45 minutes, and enough of it before the service center closes. The retake limits differ by route as well: online you get two attempts before the third has to be taken in person, while in person the same test may be taken up to five times inside a one year period, never sooner than the next day after a failure.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Wisconsin Statutes. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
Wisconsin moves new drivers through three stages: an instruction permit from age 15, a probationary license from age 16, and a regular driver license once the probationary one runs out.
An applicant under 18 also has to be enrolled in a driver education program, including the behind the wheel portion, before the instruction permit is issued, and needs an adult sponsor to sign the driver license application.
An instruction permit holder must drive with a supervising driver in the seat beside them who holds a valid regular license and has at least two years of driving experience. That can be a qualified instructor, a parent, guardian or spouse aged 19 or older, or any licensed person aged 21 or older.
To move up to a probationary license, a teen under 18 must have held the instruction permit for at least six months, be at least 16, show proof of completing driver education, and log 50 hours of supervised practice with 10 of those hours after dark.
Probationary drivers under 18 keep passenger and hour limits for the first nine months, or until they turn 18. Between midnight and 5 a.m. they may only drive alone between home, school and work. A moving traffic violation, a breach of the restrictions, or a suspension extends the restricted period by another six months, and points double on a second or later conviction.
Taking the knowledge test at a DMV customer service center is free. Applicants aged 17 and under may instead take it online through KnowTo Drive for 10 dollars per test, whether they pass or fail. The test takes about 45 minutes, so allow enough time before the service center closes.
The online test can be attempted twice. Anyone who fails both attempts has to take the third attempt in person at a DMV service center. In person, the same test may be taken up to five times within a one year period, and a failed test cannot be retaken any sooner than the next day.
