What the process looks like
- You can take the written exam at 15 if you are enrolled in and receiving instruction in an approved Service Oklahoma driver education course. From 16, driver education is optional.
- Learner permit holders can drive between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. while accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
- Moving up to an Intermediate License takes 180 days on the learner permit, 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night, no traffic convictions in the previous 180 days, and the free Work Zone Safe course for anyone under 18.
- An adult applicant who goes straight from the written test to a Class D license can take the driving test as early as the next business day, and gets three attempts before a 30 day wait applies.
The fee to print and issue a learner permit is $42.50. Every failed written test adds $4.00 to your account, payable at issuance once you pass. Online testing itself carries no extra fee.
You get 60 minutes and see your result straight away. The exam can be taken online twice; after two online failures the remaining attempts have to happen in person at a Service Oklahoma location or a Career Tech testing center, which charges $25 extra. The Oklahoma Driver Manual adds that by law you wait at least one day before retesting.

Oklahoma permit test questions, answered
How many questions are on the Oklahoma permit test?
Twenty. Service Oklahoma states on its written knowledge test page that the exam runs to 20 questions on traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, all drawn from the Oklahoma Driver Manual, and you get 60 minutes to work through them.
What score do I need to pass the Oklahoma written test?
Fifteen of the 20 questions, which is 75 percent. Service Oklahoma publishes that requirement directly, and your result appears as soon as you finish the exam.
Can I take the Oklahoma written test online?
Yes, but only twice. Online testing needs a computer with a front facing camera and a working microphone in a quiet room, and phones and tablets are not supported. Fail twice online and the rest of your attempts have to be made in person.
What does it cost if I fail the Oklahoma permit test?
Four dollars is added to your account for each failed written test, payable when you finally pass. The fee to print and issue the learner permit itself is $42.50.
