Colorado is one of the few states that lets a private driving school hand you the real state written exam, and it caps that route at four attempts across all schools before every later try has to move to a state driver license office, on top of an unusually long 12 month permit holding period for minors.

What the process looks like
- Colorado requires a minor to hold an instruction permit for a full 12 months, plus submit a signed log of 50 hours of driving with 10 of them at night, before applying for a driver license.
- Anyone who gets a permit before turning 16 and a half must also complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a driver education instructor, or substitute extra supervised hours if no approved driving school is within 30 miles.
- For the first six months after licensing, a minor cannot carry any passenger under 21 unless a licensed adult is also in the vehicle; that eases to one such passenger after 6 months and becomes unrestricted after a full year.
- Anyone under 18 needs a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult to sign an Affidavit of Liability accepting legal responsibility before they can even apply.
- The written test can be taken at home through the @Home service, in a state driver license office, or at a certified commercial driving school, and all three run on the same state exam.
- The @Home test allows 60 minutes on a desktop or laptop with a webcam, and anyone under 19 needs an adult over 19 to act as proxy, with the result emailed to that adult as well.
The @Home online knowledge test costs $5 plus a $1.50 card processing fee, about $6.50 a sitting. The state DMV fee of $11.50 for the permit is separate and can be paid in office or through myDMV online services.
The @Home online test can be retaken as often as you need, but only twice in the same day.

How many questions are on the Colorado permit test?
Colorado does not publish a question count, and we could not find one in any state document. We read the Colorado Driver Handbook DR 2337 dated January 2025 in full, plus the @Home Driving Knowledge Tests page, the permits and first-time driver license page, the adult permit page, the driver education page with its official practice quiz, and the text of DMV Rule 8. None of them names a number. The 25 questions used here are our own working figure, picked because it divides cleanly by the official 80 percent pass mark, so treat it as an estimate rather than a confirmed fact.
What score do you need to pass the Colorado written test?
80 percent correct, and that part is official. Colorado DMV Rule 8, filed as 1 CCR 204-30 for the Class R Driver Testing and Education Program, requires a correct score of 80 percent or higher on the state Driver's License Written Examination, forms DR 2252 in English and DR 2273 in Spanish. The percentage is confirmed even though the number of items behind it is not.
Where can you sit the Colorado knowledge test?
Three places, all running the same state exam: at home through the @Home service on a webcam-equipped computer, in person at a state driver license office by appointment, or at a certified commercial driving school. The @Home version allows 60 minutes and comes in English and Spanish with a read-aloud option.
How much does the Colorado @Home knowledge test cost?
About $6.50 a sitting, made up of a $5 test fee and a $1.50 card processing charge, and every later attempt costs the same again. The $11.50 state DMV fee for the permit itself is separate and can be paid in office or through myDMV online services.
How many times can you retake the Colorado knowledge test?
The @Home online test can be repeated as often as you need, but only twice in one day. At a certified driving school the limit is four written exams in total, counting any sat at other schools, after which every further attempt has to happen at a state driver license office. Miss more than half the questions on a first attempt at a school and the tester has to send you away until the next day.
How long do you have to hold a Colorado instruction permit before the road test?
12 months, along with a parent-signed log showing 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night.
Where do you take the Colorado driving skills (road) test, and what does a retake cost?
Not at a DMV office. The driving skills test is booked through an approved third-party testing school, and applicants must be at least 16. A permit is valid for 3 years or until the 21st birthday, whichever comes first. If you fail, each retest costs its own $15.40 state fee, and unlike the $11.50 written retest fee it cannot currently be paid online.
