What the process looks like
- You can apply for an instruction permit at 15 years and 6 months, and the permit stays valid for 12 months.
- The permit must be held for six months, or until you turn 18, before you are eligible for a Class G driver license. That six month clock only starts once the permit has been issued in an office.
- Before the driving test, a parent or guardian must certify at least 30 hours of supervised practice with at least 10 of them at night, or 20 hours with 6 at night if the applicant completed a certified driver education or defensive driving school program.
- A teenager under 18 can take the whole written test at home, proctored by a parent or legal guardian through their AZ MVD Now account, or through a participating Arizona professional driving school.
- Passing the test online still means one office visit afterwards, for the vision check, the photo, and a parent or guardian signature on the application. A notarized application substitutes if they cannot attend.
- Anyone who has never held a US driver license has to pass the permit test before a road test can be booked, whatever their age.

What score do you need to pass the Arizona permit test?
80% or higher, which is 24 of the 30 questions. Arizona's administrative rules back this up: R17-4-501 defines successful completion of an examination as a score of at least 80% on any required test.
Can you take the Arizona permit test without going to an MVD office?
Yes. Anyone under 18 can sit it at home, proctored by a parent or legal guardian through their AZ MVD Now account, or through a participating Arizona professional driving school. You still visit an office afterwards for the vision test and photo.
