Oregon DMV runs a 35 question knowledge test and wants 28 of them right, an 80 percent bar that leaves room for exactly seven misses. Where Oregon differs from its neighbors is in how many ways it will let you sit that test and how quickly it cuts one of them off. You can use DMV2U at home, walk into a DMV office, or go to one of the approved third party testers the Oregon Driver Manual lists for Class C knowledge testing. Online attempts are rationed twice over: two in any 24 hour period, and four in total, after which the only route left is a DMV office. Inside an office there is no fixed cooldown at all, and the manual says you may test again the same day, depending on that office's testing resource availability. On the practice side Oregon asks a provisional license applicant for 100 hours of supervised driving, or 50 hours where an approved driver education course has been taken and passed.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Oregon Revised Statutes. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
A provisional license is available at 16 or 17, and applicants need 100 hours of supervised driving experience, or 50 hours if they have taken and passed an approved driver education course.
For the first six months on a provisional license, drivers cannot carry a passenger under 20 who is not immediate family, and cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. except for work, school events, or when a licensed driver at least 25 years old is along.
In the second six months, no more than three passengers under 20 outside the immediate family are allowed, under the same overnight rule, and the restrictions end after one year or at age 18, whichever comes first.
Until they turn 18, Oregon drivers cannot operate a vehicle while using a mobile communication device, including talking on a cell phone and texting.
