Florida has a longer knowledge exam than many states: 50 questions with 40 correct to pass, so an applicant can miss ten. The course rule depends on age and applies when the learner license is issued. Applicants under 18 must complete a department approved driver education course, such as the six hour Driver Education Traffic Safety course. First time driver license applicants 18 and older generally take the four hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course, with exceptions for prior licensing and certain school driver education courses. An under 18 applicant may take the knowledge exam online through an FLHSMV approved provider, while adults test at a driver license service center. Finishing the driver education course does not unlock the online exam. After the learner license is issued to someone under 18, the driver must hold it for 12 months or until turning 18 and complete 50 supervised hours, including 10 at night, before the driving test. Check the course and testing route for your age before applying.

Can I drive at night with a Florida learner license?
Not at first. For the first 3 months after your learner license is issued you may drive only during daylight hours. After 3 months you may drive until 10 p.m. At all hours a driver who is at least 21 and licensed for the vehicle must sit in the seat closest to your right, which is the front passenger seat.
