What the process looks like
- Iowa opens its graduated licensing path with an instruction permit at 14, one of the youngest starting ages of any state.
- Teens can sit the permit knowledge test without going near a licensing office. Iowa DOT lets a parent or guardian with a valid Iowa license proctor the test at home from 30 days before the student's 14th birthday until they turn 18, and participating schools can run it on site.
- The at home option runs on an approval, not a walk in. A parent submits Iowa DOT form 431508, Application to Proctor Knowledge Exam, waits 7 to 14 days for processing, then receives an emailed test link that expires after 72 hours.
- An intermediate license follows at 16, still carrying limits on late-night driving and on the number of young passengers a new driver can carry.
- A full license becomes available at 17, once the intermediate stage's supervised-driving and restriction requirements have been met.
Iowa's rules leave retakes to the examiner's discretion rather than fixing a waiting period, and a passing knowledge result stays valid for 180 days.

How many questions are on the Iowa knowledge test?
Iowa DOT does not publish the number. The closest official figure is its own practice test, which serves up 25 questions pulled at random from a bank that includes questions from the real exam. The 25 figure carried here follows that practice format, so treat it as a working assumption rather than the confirmed length of the real test.
What score do you need to pass the Iowa permit test?
80% is the figure everyone quotes, and it is the mark Iowa DOT sets on its own practice test. For the real exam the state has never printed a number, and that turns out to be on purpose. Treat 80% as strongly indicated rather than published.
Why does Iowa not publish a pass mark for the real test?
Because its administrative rules hand that decision to the test itself. Iowa Administrative Code 761-604.20 allows a knowledge test to be revised at any time and requires each version of the test to carry its own minimum passing score. So there is no fixed statewide number to look up, and the mark you are held to is the one printed on the exam in front of you.
Where do you take the Iowa knowledge test?
