What the process looks like
- Kansas offers a Farm Permit as early as age 14 for teens who live or work on a qualifying farm, ahead of the standard licensing track.
- A regular Instructional Permit needs a passed vision and written test and expires after one year.
- A Restricted License follows: 15-year-olds need 25 hours of supervised driving plus driver's education, 16-year-olds need 50 hours with 10 at night, and the license carries a roughly 5am-to-9pm driving window and passenger limits until it has been held six months.
- An Unrestricted License opens up at 17, or earlier once the restricted period's age-based limits fall away, provided the driver has logged 50 supervised hours with 10 at night if still under 18.
The knowledge exam can be taken at any driver's license office or online through the state's KnowTo Drive site, where a passing result is brought in to the office instead of sitting the test there.
A failed written test can be retaken the next working day for a $1.50 re-exam fee. You get four attempts total; after a fourth failure, Kansas makes you wait a minimum of six months before trying again.
