What the process looks like
- An Instruction Permit is available at 14, and the holder must always have a licensed driver aged 21 or older in the vehicle.
- The permit is issued for two years from the date the knowledge exam is passed, and a passed knowledge exam stays good for one year when it is being used toward another credential.
- Arkansas sets no required number of supervised driving hours. The only clock that matters is the six month restricted period, plus a driving record free of any at-fault crash or serious traffic conviction over the prior six months.
- A Learner's License, for ages 14 to 16, additionally requires a driving record free of any serious accident or serious traffic conviction over the prior six months.
- An Intermediate License, held from 16 to 18, is restricted for six months from issuance, then still limits the driver to one unrelated minor passenger and bars driving between 11pm and 4am unless accompanied by a qualifying adult or travelling to school, work, church, or an emergency.
- A full Class D license opens up at 18 once the applicant has come through the knowledge, vision, and skills tests on a valid Instruction Permit.
Act 1289 of 2015 sets a $5 fee for each written examination with no limit on how many are charged. The Department of Finance and Administration collects it along with the cost of the license.
The ASP study guide names no waiting period between written exam attempts, but every attempt adds another $5 to what you owe at the revenue office.

How many questions are on the Arkansas permit test?
The ASP does not publish a figure for the real exam. What it does publish, on its own free practice test, is that each practice attempt is built from 25 questions pulled at random from the actual knowledge test pool and the study guide. That is why this site practices at 25, but treat it as the closest official signal rather than a confirmed exam length.
What score do you need to pass the Arkansas written test?
The ASP does not state one. Our practice test uses 20 of 25, or 80%, because that is what prep providers report and it matches the threshold most states use, but nothing on an Arkansas State Police page confirms it. Study for a clean sheet instead of a threshold.
How much does the Arkansas driving test cost?
$5 for each written exam attempt under Act 1289 of 2015. Arkansas sets no cap on how many of those $5 charges can accumulate before you are licensed, and the total is collected with your license fee.
Where do you take the Arkansas permit test?
