What the process looks like
- Applicants for a Level 1 learner's permit must be at least 16 and under 18, and for the first six months must be supervised at all times by a parent, guardian, or a licensed driver at least 25 years old who has held a Class D license for five years.
- Before driving unsupervised, teens must log 50 hours of certified practice driving, including 10 hours at night.
- Six months after the permit is issued, unsupervised driving is allowed only between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and the permit converts automatically to a full Class D license after 12 months.
- During the first 12 months, only one passenger besides an adult supervisor may ride along, aside from family members riding while the supervisor is also present.
