Your missed questions

What the process looks like
- At 15 you do not get a separate permit document. ALEA issues a Class D license carrying a Y restriction, which means a licensed adult must sit in the seat beside you.
- Before the holder's 16th birthday that adult has to be a parent, a legal guardian, a licensed driver aged 21 or older, or a licensed driving instructor. From the 16th birthday, any licensed driver in the front passenger seat will do.
- The learner license runs for four years and can be renewed once.
- Before the road test, a parent, guardian, or instructor must verify at least 50 hours of behind the wheel practice, or the applicant must complete an approved driver education course instead.
- A driver aged 16 or 17 can take the road test after holding the learner license for six months, or on turning 18, whichever comes first. The learner license is handed in at the road test and the replacement license drops the Y restriction at no charge.
- Nobody under 18 gets a fully unrestricted license until they are 17 and have held the learner license six months with no restriction violations.
ALEA charges $5 for each knowledge test attempt and does not accept checks.
The ALEA driver manual sets no waiting period before a retest, but the $5 exam fee applies again to every attempt.

How many questions are on the Alabama permit test?
ALEA does not say. Checked again on 27 August 2026 against the ALEA driver manual, the graduated licensing page, the driver license information page, and the agency's own administrative rules: all of them describe the test only by subject matter and by its $5 fee. The 30 question figure comes from prep providers, not from the agency, so treat it as a planning number rather than a promise.
What score do you need to pass the Alabama permit test?
ALEA does not publish a passing score either. Our practice test uses 24 of 30, or 80%, because that is the figure prep providers report and it is a sensible target, but do not walk into the office treating it as an official threshold. Aim to answer everything correctly.
How much does the Alabama permit test cost?
$5 per knowledge test attempt, and you cannot pay by check, so bring another payment method.
What happens if you fail the Alabama knowledge test?
You pay the $5 fee again and retest at an ALEA driver license office. The manual does not impose a waiting period, so the practical limit is office hours and your own preparation.
How old do you have to be to start driving in Alabama?
