What the process looks like
- Louisiana's graduated program covers every applicant under 17: a learner's permit at 15, an intermediate license at 16, and a permanent license at 17, all set out in OMV's own graduated licensing handout.
- Permit holders age 15 must keep the permit until both 180 days have passed and they turn 16, while permit holders who start at 16 only need 180 days or to turn 17, whichever comes first.
- Moving up to the intermediate license takes 50 hours of supervised driving practice, at least 15 of them at night, with a parent, guardian, or adult aged 21 or older in the car.
- Intermediate license holders cannot drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. without a qualifying licensed adult, and between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. they cannot carry more than one passenger under 21 who is not immediate family unless an adult 21 or older is along.
- The permanent license at 17 requires a clean intermediate stage: no at fault accidents and no convictions for moving, seat belt, or curfew violations.
OMV lists the basic Class E license fee as 32.25 dollars until age 69 and 18.75 dollars for applicants age 70 and older, plus up to a 6 dollar service fee at certain field offices. There is no additional cost to convert a Temporary Instructional Permit into a learner's permit.

How many questions are on the Louisiana OMV knowledge test?
40. OMV's own learner's permit requirements handout states that a 40 question test with a minimum score of 80 percent is required. Verified against Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles on 27 August 2026.
What score do I need to pass the Louisiana permit test?
You need at least 32 of the 40 questions correct, the same 80 percent bar OMV applies to both teen and adult first time applicants.
