Ohio calls the learner permit a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card, and the TIPIC label is more than branding: it is the card you buy at a deputy registrar agency within 60 days of passing, and the Ohio BMV will not issue it until you clear both the knowledge test and a vision screening. The scoring is 30 correct out of 40 questions, which is 75 percent, so ten wrong answers still passes and an eleventh does not. Ohio also gives you three places to sit the same exam, which few states match: BMV Online Services from home, select deputy registrar locations, or any driver exam station. Choosing the online route costs you attempts rather than money, because online knowledge testing is limited to two attempts in any six month period while in person attempts are unlimited, subject only to the 24 hour wait Ohio imposes after a failure. The whole process can start at 15 years and six months.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Ohio Revised Code. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
At 15 years and six months an applicant can start the temporary permit process by passing the knowledge test and the vision screening, which earns a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card, or TIPIC.
The knowledge test can be taken online through BMV Online Services, at select deputy registrar locations, or at any driver exam station. If you test online, the vision screening is done at the deputy registrar agency when you buy the permit.
Before a probationary driver license, a teen must hold the TIPIC at least six months, finish a driver education class with 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving, and log 50 hours of driving with at least 10 at night.
Under age 16 a TIPIC holder needs a parent, guardian, or licensed driving instructor in the passenger seat. From 16, any valid licensed driver over 21 can supervise, except between midnight and 6 a.m., when it must be a parent, guardian, custodian, or a licensed driver 21 or older named on a notarized BMV 2438.
Applicants who fail must wait at least 24 hours before retesting. There is no limit on how many times the test can be taken in person, but online knowledge testing is limited to two attempts in a six month period.
