Vermont's knowledge test is 20 questions long, among the shortest standard exams any applicant will meet, and the Vermont DMV wants 16 of them right, so four misses passes and a fifth does not. The Vermont Driver's Manual describes it as an online test with four answers per question and only one correct, and it sets no limit on how many times you may take it: you wait at least one day between attempts and pay the test fee again each time. Vermont is unusually specific about who may sit beside a permit holder. The front seat supervisor can be a licensed and unimpaired parent or guardian, a licensed or certified driver education instructor, or any other licensed and unimpaired adult who is at least 25 years old. Those supervisors log a teenager's 40 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, alongside the 30 hours of classroom, 6 behind the wheel and 6 of observation a state approved course requires. The permit must be held a full year.

What the process looks like.
The knowledge test is written from the Vermont Motor Vehicle Law. Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
Vermont lets applicants start the learner permit process at 15, but anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian's signature and a clean driving record for the previous two years.
The learner permit must be held for at least one year before a junior driver's license can be issued, and the applicant also needs six months with no permit recalls, suspensions, or revocations.
Vermont allows a wide range of supervisors in the front seat: a licensed and unimpaired parent or guardian, a licensed or certified driver education instructor, or any other licensed and unimpaired adult who is at least 25 years old.
Before a junior license, 16 and 17 year olds must finish a state approved driver education course of 30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind the wheel, and 6 hours observation, plus 40 hours of practice driving with at least 10 of those hours at night.
If you fail, you must wait at least one day before taking another test. You may test as many times as you need, and the test fee applies each time.
