Free Tennessee permit practice tests

Tennessee lets eligible 15 to 17 year olds take the actual permit knowledge test online from home rather than only a practice version, a rare option among states, though it caps out at two online attempts before an in-person visit is required.

Every Tennessee test

Work through them in order.

The essentials

Start here. Five distinct sets drawn from across the whole bank, plus a marathon that keeps going until you have seen everything.

Signs, signals and right of way

The two areas that fail the most people. Work through the sign tests until every shape and color is automatic, then handle the intersection scenarios.

The rules that get you fined

Speed, alcohol, phones, seat belts and the state specific limits that carry real penalties. These questions cite the statute so you learn the rule, not just the answer.

The exam simulator

The real thing: your state's exact question count and pass mark, scored the way the licensing agency scores it.

Your missed questions

Every question you get wrong anywhere on this site saves to a review deck on your own device. It comes back after a day, then three days, then a week, and retires once you have answered it correctly three times running. Open any test above and the review button appears as soon as the deck has something in it.

Getting licensed in Tennessee

What the process looks like

  • Tennessee's graduated system starts with a Learner Permit at age 15, which requires passing a vision screening and the knowledge exam.
  • The Learner Permit must be held for 180 days before a teen can move up to the Level Two Intermediate Restricted License at age 16, which also requires passing the road skills test.
  • Before advancing to Level Two, a parent, guardian, or driving instructor must verify at least 50 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours at night.
  • Teens aged 15 to 17 can complete the standard knowledge exam online rather than visiting a driver service center in person.

Tennessee requires a 24 hour wait after a failed knowledge test, and the online version of the test can be attempted a maximum of two times before you must test in person.

The knowledge test is written from the Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 55 (Motor and Other Vehicles). Our questions teach those same rules and cite the section behind each answer, so what you learn holds up on test day and on the road afterwards.
