Tennessee lets 15 to 17 year olds sit the real permit exam at home. Not a practice version: DOSHS, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, puts the standard knowledge exam online for that age band, so a teen can pass it without setting foot in a driver service center, which is still rare among states. The format is 30 multiple choice questions with 24 correct to pass, an 80 percent bar that allows six misses, and 60 minutes to finish. The at home route is deliberately limited, because two online attempts are all anyone gets and a third has to be taken in person, with a 24 hour wait after any failure whichever way it was sat. Passing the exam and a vision screening earns a Learner Permit at 15, which then has to be held 180 days before the Level Two Intermediate Restricted License at 16, by which point a parent, guardian or instructor must have verified 50 hours of practice including 10 at night.

Tennessee's graduated system starts with a Learner Permit at age 15, which requires passing a vision screening and the knowledge exam.
