Know the format before you book.
New York asks only 20 questions and hides a second pass mark inside them. The DMV needs 14 correct, which is 70 percent and 6 misses, but 4 of those 20 are road signs and at least 2 of the 4 must be right no matter how the rest of the paper goes. A 14 of 20 with only one sign question correct is still a fail. Most practice sites mention that rule as trivia; this one applies it in scoring the way the real exam does. The rest of the New York path is equally specific. A junior permit holder logs 50 hours of supervised practice with 15 of them at night, and the five hour pre licensing course, form MV-278, has to be completed before a road test can even be booked. The road test itself deducts points per maneuver, with more than 30 points a fail, and New York publishes every road test site as open data, including locations well outside the city where availability is often better.

How many questions are on the New York permit test?

What is the MV-278 five hour course?
A mandatory pre licensing course every New York applicant must complete before scheduling the road test. Many providers now run it online.
Can I drive in New York City with a junior learner permit?
Only between 5 AM and 9 PM, and only under the direct supervision of a parent, a guardian, a person in loco parentis, a driver education teacher or a driving school instructor who is at least 21 and licensed for the vehicle. The car must also have dual controls (dual brakes), and your supervising driver must be the only person in the front seat.
