No Turn on Red sign
At this signal you cannot turn right, or left onto a one-way street, while facing a red light. Wait for the green light or a green arrow before turning.
Federal designation R10-11a in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Mounted on the signal pole or mast arm facing the lane it restricts, usually at intersections near schools, hospitals or heavy pedestrian crossings.
How to recognise it
This sign is a tall rectangle in white, the standard background for a rule you must obey. These carry the force of law. Ignore one and you have broken a traffic rule, not just a guideline. Most are white rectangles with black text, and the handful that are not, the stop and yield signs, get their own unmistakable shapes.
What the test wants you to know
This sign only overrides the default right-on-red rule for the specific approach it is posted on, not the whole intersection. Some versions carry a small time plaque underneath, so the ban might only run during school hours or the evening rush rather than all day.
Practise it
Reading about a sign is not the same as recognising it in half a second with an examiner watching. Every state road signs test on this site shows the sign and asks you to name it, then shows four faces and asks you to pick the right one.
