Shape and background first
Federal designation S1-1 in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Same pentagon, same fluorescent yellow green, same federal code as the school zone sign, and a different job. This one is posted at the point where children cross rather than ahead of the school, and the walking figure on it is the only thing on the face that tells you which of the two you are looking at.

Conventional road size: 36 x 36 in
Standard: If a School Crossing assembly is used, it pairs the School sign with a downward diagonal arrow plaque and stands at the crossing or as close to it as possible.
