New Jersey written test: 13 languages and an oral option

The MVC's own sample test page confirms the real exam has 50 multiple choice questions with 40 correct, an 80 percent score, needed to pass, so up to 10 wrong answers still passes. The driver manual adds a detail that surprises people at the screen: a survey question about organ donation is attached on top of the 50 scored questions, so the paper you see is one item longer than the one being graded. Fifty questions makes this one of the longest permit exams in the country, and because the bar is the common 80 percent rather than anything stricter, that length turns into room to be wrong: 10 misses and you have still passed.

The MVC offers the knowledge test in English, American Sign Language and twelve other languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, Albanian and Spanish. If you cannot read in any language, headphones are supplied so the test can be given orally. Fail and you return to an MVC location to retest, but check that specific center's appointment or walk in policy first, because not every New Jersey licensing center offers driver testing services at all.
