New Jersey motorcycle permit test
New Jersey permanently caps riders who pass their road test on a motorcycle of 231cc or smaller at a 500cc machine afterward, a restriction that only disappears if they instead complete the state's Motorcycle Safety Education Program.

Honest note: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) does not publish the motorcycle test format anywhere we could confirm, so the 50 question count and pass mark of 40 are the best available figures rather than verified facts. The riding knowledge below is the same either way. Confirm the format with the agency before your appointment.
The rider course rule. Holders of a valid NJ basic or commercial driver license can waive both the knowledge test and the motorcycle road test by completing an approved Motorcycle Safety Education Program Basic Rider Course, though riders in the Graduated Driver License program may not qualify New Jersey MVC Motorcycle Manual, checked 2026-08-28.
