Controls and basic operation
Clutch, throttle, both brakes, the friction zone and starting on a hill.

The format on file, and what is confirmed
California DMV ran the multi-year federal study that produced the Motorcycle Operator Manual now used across most of the country, yet its own website still will not print the exact question count for the M1 knowledge test it administers today.
Format not published by the agency
California Department of Motor Vehicles does not publish the motorcycle test format anywhere we could confirm, so the 25 question count and pass mark of 20 are the best available figures rather than verified facts. The riding knowledge below is the same either way. Confirm the format with the agency before your appointment.
Does a course skip the test?
DMV may waive the motorcycle skills test for a rider who presents a valid Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training (DL 389) within 12 months of the certificate's issue date; the written knowledge test is not waived by the certificate.
