Florida written test: 40 of 50, at home if under 18

FLHSMV sets the knowledge exam at 50 questions with 40 correct answers required, a flat 80 percent. That allows ten wrong answers. Applicants under 18 must complete a department approved driver education course before a learner license is issued. The six hour Driver Education Traffic Safety course is one approved route. First time applicants 18 and older generally take the four hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course instead, subject to the exceptions in Florida Statutes section 322.095. The course requirement is checked for licensing, not used to unlock the online knowledge exam.

Florida allows applicants under 18 to take the real knowledge exam online through an FLHSMV approved provider. Adults take it at a driver license service center. Online eligibility depends on age, not on finishing the driver education course first. An under 18 applicant must complete a department approved driver education course before the learner license is issued. A learner license issued to someone under 18 must be held for 12 months or until they turn 18, whichever comes first, and the under 18 driver must log 50 supervised practice hours with 10 at night before the driving test.
