What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Colorado Revised Statutes Title 42, Vehicles and Traffic: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

80 percent is in the rule, the item count is not
Colorado publishes its pass mark in regulation rather than in guidance. DMV Rule 8, filed as 1 CCR 204-30 for the Class R Driver Testing and Education Program, tells certified testers to require a correct score of 80 percent or higher on the state Driver's License Written Examination, forms DR 2252 in English and DR 2273 in Spanish. That percentage is confirmed. The number of questions behind it is not published anywhere the agency could be read: the Colorado Driver Handbook DR 2337, the @Home knowledge test pages, the permits and first time driver license page, the adult permit page and the driver education page were all checked and none names a count. So the sensible way to prepare for Colorado is to work to a clean sheet rather than to a number of allowed misses, because the denominator is not a published fact.
Colorado DMV Rule 8, 1 CCR 204-30, Class R Driver Testing and Education Program, read 2026-08-27Three places to sit it, and a four attempt ceiling at driving schools
The same state exam is given three ways: at home through the @Home service on a webcam equipped desktop or laptop, in person at a state driver license office, or at a certified commercial driving school. The @Home version can be repeated twice in the same day and there is no overall cap on sittings. At a driving school the ceiling is four written exams in total, counted across every school, after which each further attempt has to happen at a state driver license office, and a first attempt that misses more than half the questions blocks a same day retest at that school. Each written retest at a state office costs $11.50.
