What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Arizona Revised Statutes Title 28, Transportation: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

30 questions, 24 to pass, and the at home option
Arizona MVD states the format on its own permit test page: 30 questions with a pass mark of 24, which is 80 percent and leaves room for six wrong answers. The same page sets out two ways to sit it. Permit Test at Home is proctored by a parent or legal guardian through their AZ MVD Now account, or by a participating Arizona professional driving school, and carries a $7 application fee. It is available to applicants under 18. Testing inside an MVD office is done on a touch screen computer with an audio version available for anyone who wants the questions read out. Office written testing runs 7:30am to 4:45pm Monday to Friday with no appointment, but the offices close on state holidays and on the second Wednesday of every month, which catches people out more often than the exam does. Passing at home still leaves one office visit for the vision test, the photo, and a guardian signature on the application.
Arizona MVD, Permit Test (at Home or in an Office), read 2026-08-27What the test and the credential cost
Arizona keeps the charges low and simple. There is no separate examination fee inside an MVD office, so the written test costs nothing beyond the credential itself. The instruction permit is $7, and a Class D or M license issued off the back of a written exam is $10. The statute setting those figures lists no separate Travel ID or REAL ID surcharge, so a federally compliant credential does not cost extra in Arizona. The only test specific charge in the whole path is the $7 application fee attached to Permit Test at Home, paid by the parent or guardian doing the proctoring.
