People say written test, the WYDOT says knowledge test

What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Wyoming Statutes: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

An official 80 percent applied to an unofficial length
WYDOT states on its Driver Services re examination page that the written test must be passed with a minimum score of 80 percent in order to proceed to the driving skills test. That figure is official. The length is not: the testing page, the driver licensing FAQ and the 98 page Wyoming Class C driver manual all describe what the written test covers without giving a count. The 20 of 25 shown here is the confirmed 80 percent applied to the length driver training sites quote, which is why Wyoming is carried as unverified. The retake wait of three days for anyone who misses 13 or more questions was recorded in an earlier pass of this file and could not be found again in the manual's machine readable text on 28 August 2026, so this page draws no conclusion about the length from it.

The written test is given in person at a WYDOT exam station on the automated testing system, and there is no online option. A paper test is offered to applicants who are uncomfortable with computers. You may take the same written test twice in one day, and if both attempts fail the next try waits for a later day. There is no separate charge for sitting the test, because it is part of applying and the application fee covers it: a Wyoming instruction permit costs $40 and an original license costs $40, with a $5 technology fee added to every class of license. The driver manual sets out what the exam covers, which is picking out traffic signs by shape, color or symbol, reading signals and pavement markings, and multiple choice questions on traffic law, safety, crash prevention and vehicle equipment.
