What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the South Carolina Code of Laws, Title 56 (Motor Vehicles), Chapter 1 (Driver's Licenses): signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

An 80 percent bar SCDMV publishes on its own practice exam
SCDMV runs a free Driver's License Practice Exam at apps.sc.gov, built from its own storehouse of real exam questions and reshuffled every time you start it, and the score screen states that 80 percent or higher is needed to pass. That sentence is the clearest official statement of the standard, because the figure does not appear on the licensing pages or in the driver's manual. What SCDMV has never published is the length. The current 141 page Driver's Manual was searched in full and does not contain the word question, and the governing statutes fix what the examination must cover rather than how many items it holds. The 30 questions and 24 correct used here are a driver training length applied to that confirmed 80 percent, which is why South Carolina is carried as unverified.

There is no online option in South Carolina. Applicants must visit an SCDMV branch before 4 p.m. to take the knowledge test in person, and it can be taken at any branch. SCDMV also authorizes One Stop driver training schools to administer the knowledge and skills tests on its behalf. No study material or electronic device is allowed in the testing area, and carrying anything in that could help with the answers is an automatic fail. Each sitting costs $2.00, charged separately from the $2.50 beginner's permit fee, which itself covers original, renewal, duplicate and modified permits. The permit is available from 15, and minors hold it 180 days before advancing while applicants 18 or older hold it 30 days.
