What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Rhode Island General Laws, Title 31 (Motor and Other Vehicles), Chapter 10 (Operators' and Chauffeurs' Licenses): signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

40 questions and 90 minutes, but no published pass mark
The Rhode Island Driver's Manual sets the computerized knowledge exam at 40 multiple choice questions drawn from Rhode Island motor vehicle law and the rules of the road, with up to 90 minutes to finish, which is generous for that length. The manual does not state a pass mark. A full text search of it turns up no percentage and no minimum number of correct answers, and the RI DMV permit and test pages do not give one either. The only state source that does is the Community College of Rhode Island, which administers the RI DMV Knowledge Test as the final exam of the mandatory 33 hour course and tells students they need 70 percent. Applied to the DMV's confirmed 40 questions that is 28 correct, which is the bar this page uses as a working figure rather than a published rule.
Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, Rhode Island Driver's Manual, read 2026-08-28Cranston only, by reservation, in three languages
There is no online or remote testing option in Rhode Island. The exam is computerized but administered only in person, by reservation, at DMV headquarters at 600 New London Ave in Cranston. Applicants under 18 who took driver education somewhere other than CCRI test there as well and bring their course completion certificate. The computerized exam runs in English, Spanish and Portuguese during normal business hours. Any other language is handled as a printed exam that has to be booked ahead through a separate request, and you must bring someone who can translate for you before and after the test, though only you are allowed in the exam room. Fail and the RI DMV makes you wait at least 8 days before sitting the knowledge exam again.
