New York written test: 14 of 20, plus 2 of 4 signs

The New York permit test is 20 questions and you need 14 correct, which is 70 percent and leaves 6 misses. Sitting inside that total is a second requirement most states do not have. Four of the 20 questions are about road signs, and at least 2 of those 4 must be answered correctly regardless of your overall score. A paper scoring 14 of 20 with only one sign question right is still a fail, because the subject minimum is checked on its own. That makes the sign questions worth more attention than their share of the paper suggests, and it is why the practice test on this site enforces the same rule instead of listing it as a footnote.

Passing the written test in New York does not put you in line for a road test. The five hour pre licensing course, form MV-278, is mandatory before a road test can be booked, and many providers now run it online. A junior permit holder must also complete 50 hours of supervised practice with 15 of them at night. The road test is scored by deducting points per maneuver, and more than 30 points is a fail. New York publishes every road test site as open data, including locations well outside the city where availability is often better.
