People say written test, the DMV says knowledge test

What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Nebraska Revised Statutes, Chapter 60 (Motor Vehicles), Motor Vehicle Operator's License Act and Nebraska Rules of the Road: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

25 questions and 5 misses, from the examiner manual itself
Nebraska's format is documented because the DMV publishes the Driver Licensing Examination Policies and Procedures Manual, the rulebook its own licensing staff work from. Its section on the operator's license sets out the Class O written test as 25 questions with a maximum of 5 wrong, and the same manual states that applicants must score a minimum of 80 percent on every written test the DMV gives. That makes 20 correct the target, and it makes Nebraska one of the states where the count is as definitive as a published figure gets rather than a number borrowed from a prep site. There is no separate fee for sitting the written test; a first standard learner's permit costs 13 dollars in total, an 8 dollar document fee plus a 5 dollar security fee.

The tablet version and the audio version of the Nebraska test both run in English and Spanish. A paper or electronic foreign language dictionary is allowed once an examiner has checked it for notes. If you read neither language comfortably, you can ask for the non verbal picture test, which the examiner manual scores separately as 24 questions with 4 allowed wrong rather than the standard 25 and 5. Those alternatives are written into the same manual as the main format, which is why they can be stated here with a number attached.

A passed Nebraska written test is valid for six months, so you can come back later for the drive test without sitting the written one again, and missing that window means starting with the written test over. A failed test, written or drive, cannot be retaken the same day; you return to a driver licensing office on a later day. The DMV publishes no longer waiting period than that for the written test. The drive test is stricter, since three consecutive failures require a DMV approved driver training course, or holding the learner's permit at least 90 days, before reapplying.
