Iowa motorcycle permit test
Iowa hands out one of the longest running motorcycle permits in the country, a single four year term with no renewal option, yet finishing the state's own rider education course only ever clears the hands on skills test, never the written knowledge exam.

Honest note: Iowa Department of Transportation does not publish the motorcycle test format anywhere we could confirm, so the 25 question count and pass mark of 20 are the best available figures rather than verified facts. The riding knowledge below is the same either way. Confirm the format with the agency before your appointment.
The rider course rule. Completing Iowa approved motorcycle rider education waives only the on-cycle skills test; the written knowledge test is not on the state's list of tests a training course can waive, so it still applies to every Class M or endorsement applicant Iowa Administrative Code 761-604.21, 604.31, checked 2026-08-28.
