What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Massachusetts General Laws: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

18 of 25 passes, and the clock runs for 25 minutes
The RMV's knowledge test FAQ states that you will be asked 25 questions and must get 18 right, which is 72 percent and 7 allowed misses. That is a lower bar than the 80 percent most states set, and it is the single most useful thing to know before booking. The time allowance matches the question count almost exactly at 25 minutes, so roughly a minute a question. The exam cannot be paused once it starts, and no driver's manual, other reference material or electronic device is allowed, whether the test is sat online or in person at a Registry counter. Those conditions are identical in both settings, so choosing the online option changes where you sit rather than how the exam is run.

Only the Class D passenger and Class M motorcycle permit exams can be taken online in Massachusetts. A commercial learner's permit exam cannot. Fail and the RMV says you will be given instructions at the end of the exam on how to pay for and take another one, so budget for a retest charge and confirm the current amount with the RMV rather than trusting a figure quoted elsewhere. The harder trap is the permit itself: if a Massachusetts learner's permit expires, the RMV does not renew it. You complete the application process again and retake the permit exam, which turns a lapsed permit into a full restart rather than a paperwork fix.
