What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Indiana Code Title 9, Motor Vehicles: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

Two components, 80 percent on each, no published count
Indiana BMV describes the knowledge exam as two multiple choice components, one on traffic signs and one on traffic rules and laws, with an applicant required to score 80 percent or higher on each component separately. That wording appears on the BMV knowledge exam page and again in Chapter 9 of the Indiana Driver's Manual, and neither states how many questions each component holds. The full 2026 manual was downloaded and searched end to end: the only question counts anywhere in it are for the for hire endorsement exam and the motor driven cycle endorsement exam, each 25 questions with five allowed wrong, which explains where the Indiana 25 figure circulating online comes from and why it does not apply to the car exam. The BMV points the signs component at Chapter 6 and the traffic rules component at Chapters 6, 7 and 8.
Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Knowledge Exam, read 2026-08-28Walk in testing, next business day retakes, 180 day results
The exam is a walk in, computer based test taken inside a BMV branch, with no appointment needed unless it has to be read aloud, and there is no at home option. Fail it and you can return the next business day, which is among the shortest waits published anywhere. The driving skills exam is treated far more strictly: a failure there carries a seven day wait, and three skills failures on a single learner's permit push the wait out to two months. A passing knowledge result stays good for 180 days, so the written test can be cleared well ahead of the driving half. On the money side the BMV Fee Chart shows no separate knowledge or road test charge at all: the learner's permit is $9.00 and a driver's license under 75 is $17.50.
