What the questions cover
Everything comes back to the Official Code of Georgia Annotated Title 40, Motor Vehicles and Traffic: signals and signs, right of way, speed rules, passing and lane use, parking, alcohol limits, and the licensing rules for new drivers. Multiple choice, one correct answer each.

Two sections, graded separately, 15 of 20 each
Georgia DDS runs the knowledge exam as two separate 20 question tests, Road Signs and Road Rules, and requires a minimum score of 15 out of 20 on each one. That is 75 percent per section rather than the 80 percent common elsewhere, but the sectioning makes it a harder structure to pass than the percentage suggests. There is no combined score, so a section is either cleared or it is not, and falling one question short on either half fails the attempt no matter how the other half went. Any single figure quoted for Georgia, including the 40 question and 30 correct total held on this site, is a composite used for cross state comparison only. DDS publishes no such combined threshold and does not apply one.

The knowledge exam is covered by the learner's permit fee rather than billed separately, but DDS takes cash or a credit or debit card only. Checks and money orders are not accepted and refunds are not issued, so an attempt you are not ready for is money gone. The waiting period after a failure escalates rather than staying fixed: one day after a first failure, seven days after a second. Every retest also needs its own appointment and payment of the permit fee again, so the cost of repeated attempts in Georgia is the fee plus the appointment calendar rather than a flat retest charge.
