Survey Crew sign
Surveyors are taking measurements in or near the roadway, sometimes standing in a lane briefly with no barrels or heavy equipment around them.
Seen ahead of highway widening or realignment projects while engineers are still marking out where the new road will go.
How to recognise it
This sign is a diamond stood on its point in orange, used only for temporary work zones. Orange means people are working on or near the road. Fines are typically doubled in an active work zone, which is exactly the kind of detail permit tests like to ask about.
What the test wants you to know
This is the sign most likely to catch a driver off guard, because there is no dump truck or paver to signal that a work zone is active, just a small crew and a tripod. Reduced speed and doubled fine rules still apply, which is exactly what test writers like to check with this one.
Practise it
Reading about a sign is not the same as recognising it in half a second with an examiner watching. Every state road signs test on this site shows the sign and asks you to name it, then shows four faces and asks you to pick the right one.
