Soft Shoulder sign

Federal designation W8-4 in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Common after road resurfacing projects and on rural routes with unpaved shoulders that have not been properly graded or compacted.

How to recognise it

This sign is a diamond stood on its point in yellow, the warning colour. Yellow diamonds telling you what the road is about to do. They are advisory rather than mandatory, but ignoring them is how people end up in ditches and how examiners end up failing you.

What the test wants you to know

If you do have to leave the roadway in an emergency after seeing this sign, ease off the pavement gradually rather than jerking the wheel, because a soft shoulder can grab a tire and pull the vehicle further off course than a firm one would. It shows up most often right after fresh paving or resurfacing work, before the shoulder has been compacted.

The sign people confuse it with

Soft Shoulder gets mixed up with Pavement Ends more than any other pairing in this category. Put them side by side and the difference is obvious, which is exactly why it is worth doing once rather than meeting them cold in the exam.

Practise it
