Playground sign
A playground is near the road ahead. Children may run into the street without looking, so slow down and watch the shoulder.
Federal designation W15-1 in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Mounted near parks, schools with an attached play area, and residential streets bordering a public playground, often paired with a reduced speed plaque.
How to recognise it
This sign is a diamond stood on its point in fluorescent yellow green, reserved for schools, pedestrians and bicycles. Yellow diamonds telling you what the road is about to do. They are advisory rather than mandatory, but ignoring them is how people end up in ditches and how examiners end up failing you.
What the test wants you to know
The fluorescent yellow green background puts this sign in the same attention grabbing family as school and pedestrian signs, and that is the point: small children are the least predictable hazard on the road, so the color is chosen to stand out from an ordinary yellow warning.
Practise it
Reading about a sign is not the same as recognising it in half a second with an examiner watching. Every state road signs test on this site shows the sign and asks you to name it, then shows four faces and asks you to pick the right one.
