Farm Equipment Crossing sign

Federal designation W11-5 in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Common on rural two lane roads that cut through active farmland, especially near field entrances and grain storage sites at harvest time.

How to recognise it

This sign is a diamond stood on its point in yellow, the warning colour. Yellow diamonds telling you what the road is about to do. They are advisory rather than mandatory, but ignoring them is how people end up in ditches and how examiners end up failing you.

What the test wants you to know

Farm equipment is usually marked with an orange slow moving vehicle emblem, and the closing speed between a car doing fifty five and a tractor doing fifteen is easy to misjudge. Tests often ask what that orange triangle emblem means on its own, so learn it alongside this sign rather than after it.

The sign people confuse it with

Farm Equipment Crossing gets mixed up with Cattle Crossing more than any other pairing in this category. Put them side by side and the difference is obvious, which is exactly why it is worth doing once rather than meeting them cold in the exam.
