End Road Work sign
Marks the far end of the work zone. The special rules that applied inside it, the lower limit, no passing, and doubled fines, no longer apply once you pass this sign.
Federal designation G20-2 in the MUTCD, the national standard every state signs to. Placed at the tail of a work zone, often a mile or more past the equipment itself once the roadway is genuinely back to normal condition.
How to recognise it
This sign is a wide rectangle in orange, used only for temporary work zones. Orange means people are working on or near the road. Fines are typically doubled in an active work zone, which is exactly the kind of detail permit tests like to ask about.
What the test wants you to know
The trap is treating this sign as a green light to accelerate immediately. Lane markings, shoulder width, and traffic patterns often have not fully returned to normal right at this point, so the safer habit is to speed back up gradually rather than all at once.
Practise it
Reading about a sign is not the same as recognising it in half a second with an examiner watching. Every state road signs test on this site shows the sign and asks you to name it, then shows four faces and asks you to pick the right one.
