KYTC sets one number and only one. Its DRIVE graduated licensing page requires 80 percent on the written test, and the current Kentucky Driver Manual repeats the same 80 percent figure, but neither states how many questions the paper holds. Kentucky State Police, which actually runs the exam, directs the public to its driver testing contact address and phone line for test details rather than publishing a format. The regulations do not close the gap either: 601 KAR 12:020 covers retesting after an expired or suspended license and 601 KAR 12:120 covers vision testing, and neither sets the shape of the written exam. That is why this page quotes the percentage and refuses to quote a length. Any site telling you Kentucky asks a specific number of questions is repeating a figure no Kentucky agency has published.

The exam is given by the Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch, by appointment, not at the KYTC office where you applied. Kentucky State Police is blunt that the Kentucky Driver Manual is the only approved source material for the written test, and the manual covers driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs before closing with a short set of sample questions and an answer key. Language coverage is wide: the manual lists more than 30 languages the written test is available in, and every testing office keeps tablets that read the test aloud in English and several other languages with no special appointment, though a fully oral administration or a human interpreter has to be booked ahead. Fail the written test and KYTC says you may return the next available day. A failed road test is treated far more strictly, with a 7 day wait before another attempt.
